Nationally, 1 million students will fail to graduate on time each year. Graduation problems can transform into high levels of juvenile delinquency in the disadvantaged community. Juvenile delinquency is expected to increase to 18 percent by 2030; an increase in delinquency will have a devastating impact on society. Since schools account for about 15 percent of student achievement outcomes and socioeconomic factors are 60+ percent and the ongoing issues with the national system, we need to move quickly in fundamentally new directions. A new direction requires the guidance of a community organization(s) with a 21st century vision. RHAM is designed, practically and theoretically, to help disadvantaged children overcome internal and external barriers that will inhibit success. Our innovative approach in mental health with a primary focus on emotional self-regulation has proven to be very effective. As one of many by-products of our innovation, participants gain on average 20+ percent in academic achievement with the highest recorded increase of 48 percent in academic achievement and 80 percent in Citizenship; the national average for similar conventional programs is an 11 percent increase. Due to the dire conditions of the national system, RHAM was constructed for the long-haul.
With our open door policy, over 100 disadvantaged children of all ages and young adults walk through our doors on a weekly basis. RHAM is a “Safe Haven”.
We currently offer the following free services and resources:
1. Congregate lunches and snacks
RHAM provides after-school snacks, spring break and summer camp lunches and snacks to disadvantaged children 2 to 18 years of age.
2. Services for youth involved in or at risk of involvement with criminal activity
RHAM facilitates community hours for juveniles and young adult offenders. Facilitating community hours provides an opportunity to informally employ our innovation in social science. Also, our after-school, spring-break and summer camp programs are utilized as a preventive measure.
3. Recreational and educational services
RHAM offers after-school, spring break and summer camp activities for disadvantaged children 2 to 18 years of age. We help with academics, provide piano and drum lessons and travel to other cities, towns and states. In summary, our activities are designed to help disadvantaged children develop a broad range of theoretical and practical insights and abilities.
4. Leadership development
RHAM’s Youth Leadership Council (RYLC) is comprised of disadvantaged children 10 to 18 years of age. The RYLC’s mission is to act as a “Youth Board of Directors”. Members of the RYLC have an opportunity to develop 21st century business and social skill sets.
ADDITIONAL ACTIVITY: Our drum and dance squads are utilized for promotional purposes of our services and resources. The squads perform in parades and at special events, and are comprised of children 6 to 18 years of age. Children on the squads have displayed the best behavior and grades. RYLC is currently in the process of developing little league sport teams.
